Dvd RW plays dvd but does not recognize blank dvd's

I have an hp pavilion a630n pc. It came with a Lite-on dvd+rw sohw-802s. Suddenly the dvd writer would play any dvd that i put in but will not recognize any blank dvd disk that i put in. It does recognize blank cd's. With this problem i decided to connect my external LG GSA-E10L to the usb but it to contains the same problem. When I plug the LG to my laptop it works just fine. So I had another DVD RW that I installed to my PC which was made by HP model DVD writer 400c. It too has the same problem. I have checked the drivers and the computer says they are working properly and the best driver is being used for the hardware.
I am very lost and confused. Can any one help me Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.
