Getting black screen with blinking line

Hi... This is the 2nd time Ive gotten this.
About 2 wks ago & fixed it somehow, unplugged
things, on & off etc but not sure what did it?!

Ive read other suggestions but wanted to be
sure for my system. I have Windows XP pro SP3.
Screen is black &frozen with blinker top left after
"compaq" window. I can get to that 'Bios' screen
Ive read about & the 'Startup' screen but have NO idea
what I should be seeing as normal? Also cant get
to f8 (system resore?) I believe?
Any help appreciated... cat

I cant find the backup CD & I think I meant f8'safemode'
If you like a copy of a screen pls tell me how to?

This sounds like your MBR is corrupted. This could be caused by a number of reasons, including that your HD is getting bad sectors in the mbr.
