Can someone tell me if you can do a complete back-up of a laptop ( running vista)using an external hard drive including the operating system?My laptop came without any operating system disks or recovery disks.So if my hard drive required replacement i don`t have anything to load onto a new hard drive.

Yes you can - by creating what's known as a "disk image" (essentially it's a complete backup of a partition including all the data on it).

I use Paragon software for this purpose, it's brilliant and there's a free version here:
