how do i set a registry entry as read only

i know these topics are usually on how to delete read only entries but i need to know how to actually make a read only key. i have some applications running that i really dont want people messing with the settings and want to make the configuration variables read only


i know you can use ntfs permissions on the keys but for some reasion i cant make it work on individual variables

create another user account for the other people and make it a limited user...they will not be able to change any system settings...

it isn't just users a few of the programs i use are updated frequently and keep resetting to default settings i just have a few variable strings i want to mark as read only
