Hi all,
I am a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Kayes, Mali in West Africa where I am providing support to the local radio station in the installation of a Cyber Cafe.

Last week UNESCO sent us a new computer that is then connected via a Netgear Fast Pro Swith to 5 separate terminals (manufactured by NComputing). These terminals are not PCs in themselves, but rather allow for users to to simultaneously sign on and use the one server/CPU.

They are connected by a DCHP server. When we connected the network, we at first had a problem where the server recognized the LAN connection but had no connectivity. I played around with it for a bit and after disabling the Windows XP firewall it worked. But now the problem has returned and won't connect.

I've tried playing with the network cards configuration, updated the driver, and basically anything else I can think of that might solve for the problem. For the life of me I can't understand how a problem can come and go if no configurations are changed, but there it is.

Here are my system specs and I figure you will have me run the diag. I've seen asked for on other threads, so here they are as well. However you will note that I'm working with the OS in french and this has made it SOOOO much easier to try and figure out what's not working.

Suffixe DNS propre à la connexion :

I also did IPCONFIG/RENEW and it gave (badly translated):

An error occurred while renewing the connection interface to the local network : impossible to contact your DCH server. The time limit (or expected time) passed.

Sorry so long but I'm not sure what we're looking for. The thing that stands out to me is the DHCP server IP address invalid and how to fix that.

Thanks in advance, these computers are very important to the community but will quickly get broke-down if they don't work properly.

Best regards

Hello, I have what seems to be the same issue. Figured I'd chime in about the things I have done to attempt fixing it, if this seems like a thread Hijack, lemme know.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
My issue began with my Linksys WRT54G v1.1 Running OpenWRT White Russian v0.9. I had programmed the router with linux to bypass a StarCraft issue due to multiple PC's not networking properly, apparently NAT does not function on their servers. Moving on. I ran 2 Xbox 360's, 2 Vista Home Premium 64bit PC's (All Wired, a Hub placed between the router and one 360 and PC.), and one Macbook (Wireless) through this router successfully for roughly 6 months. The router began to drop everyone randomly, and say that it was identifying for long periods of time. Through multiple powercycling events of the router and Cable Modem, I would obtain a connection again. Half the time I could access the network through Static IP's, but sometimes I could not. Through DHCP, I would get these 169.x.x.x IP's with a 255.255.0.0 Submask. It seemed as though the Cable Modem being plugged in influenced my connection, but it was hard to tell. I managed to keep things running, until I had an NAT message on Xbox Live informing me that my NAT settings were too strict, so I wanted to change them out, then I found out that it would be unbelievably difficult to setup on White Russian, due to lack of proper UPnP support. As such, I installed Kamikaze instead. After successfully loading the firmware, and connecting my Cable Modem to the Router, I was changing the settings within the router to have the appropriate IP address and configure the wireless settings. Etc. I don't know if I set the IP address incorrectly, or what happened, but I've lost access to my router entirely.

STEPS ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE ISSUE
I have attempted to configure both DHCP and Static IP's to the Macbook, and my PC to achieve a connection. It would not connect. All the DHCP addresses are 169.x.x.x, with NO default Gateway. IPconfig /release/renew doesn't register at all I'm assuming due to not contacting a DHCP server. I'm currently attempting to run various IP scanners to find the router's IP address. I have tried power-cycling my devices endlessly. I've even attempted to use a 24 port switch that was given to me by my IT teacher back in my Career Center days. It's a 3COM Superstack 3, 3300 Model. Not sure about any other details on it, but I may be able to find them given the need. However, I doubt this would be necessary as it's doing the same thing. Now I'm wondering if the networking issue lies within my router, or computers. Maybe I'm simply doing things entirely incorrectly. Albeit I've had multiple forms of DHCP and Static Networks running over the years, I find it hard to believe that I've forgotten how to plug in a cable = \ (not that I haven't checked the cable configuration 30 times now.).

I'm currently connected to the internet through the Macbook, via Cat5e connected directly to the Cable Modem, so I doubt it is an issue.

Any advice on this matter would surely help both of us, it seems that this improper DHCP addressing is rather difficult to address. (Mild comic relief attempt due to severe frustration of roughly 1 weeks attempting to fix a busted network.)

If anything I've said seems to be off compared to your issue, please inform me. I'm sorry again if this seems like a thread hijacking. Never posted on a tech-site before, and thought it more appropriate to post within a thread that had a very similar if not completely alike issue.

Hey, I understand your hesitation to open your own thread, but it seems that we may have different answers to our problems and it would be easier for the experts to address us separately since what they advise us to do is bound to be a little different. I've tried reading other forum threads for what to do, but either it doesn't work or the issue is just slightly different and therefore not applicable to my problem.

Best of luck finding a solution.

Thanks, I'll open my own thread a bit later, going to attempt a few more things at the moment.

RadioRuraleKayes:
Remove power from all devices on the network. Swap all network cables end for end to ensure a good electromechanical connection. Power up the devices one at a time starting with the device which connects you to the WAN.

I'd bet on a poor ethernet connection.

Bonne courage.

Tried unplugging all power and ethernet cables several times, but it still gives me the same result.

At this point, I just have the server/computer connected to the NetGear Pro switch. My assumption is that once I get that connection working the other five acess terminals will connect to the server with no problem.

I should mention though, since power/electricity may be a factor, that we have been having several power outages and perhaps this is a factor in what's not working. However, no outages today and after unplugging replugging everything no change in result.

Also, I believe I updated the driver on the network card, but now when I run the diagnostic, the network card shows up twice. It tells me that the first instance of the card performs as pasted before but the second instance fails some of the tests.

Can anyone get me started on figuring what's going on here. I'm frankly out of my league on the networking side and have exhausted the very limited repertoire of troubleshooting options in my toolbox.

Thanks in advance,
