Hello All,

I'm receiving this message when trying to use disk clean up;
(start>acc.>tools>disk cleanup)

"Disk space cleanup manager has encountered a problem and needs to close"

The message box is the only thing that pops up.

I don't know exactly when this started but it 'maybe' after I used a registry clener tool.

I did try to roll back the back up in the tool but it did not work.
I also tried Restore to no-avail.

And Yes, I know I can clean up manualy But I find it more convenient to use disk cleanup.

Any suggestions on what to do?

First thing I would try is to run the following

sfc /scannow from the command line. You will need a Windows disc handy.

You will most likely need a CD of the same type as you have for the OS (home, pro)

This was a bad move.

A registry cleaner will not increase your system's speed or performance, and has the potential to break your registry to the point that your PC is no longer bootable. We strongly advise that people stay away from any of the registry cleaners out there. Go HERE to get more information about why registry cleaners aren't needed.

Try the sfc command 1st and then we will continue from there if needed.

OK, I ran 'sfc /scannow'

Tried to re-install but I have the exact same results.

What now?

How did you try to reinstall?
What happened when you ran sfc /scannow?
What disk did you use to reinstall?

I ran sfc /scannow with the orignal WinXP disk.

It ran for about 35 min. I did not notice any end result.

I meant to say I re-booted then tried again.

I still get error message when trying to use 'Disk clean up'

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Also just to add to the information that has been requested please do the following.

Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop

OK, I ran ATF cleaner and it works. Thanks.

It is a good work around but does not not solve the underline problem.

try this...

Click Start... and then click Run... Type in regedit press ENTER
Locate and then click the following registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches

On the File menu... click Export... and then click Desktop... type VolumeCaches in the File name box... and then click Save.

This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure... you can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore the key... double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop... and then click Yes.

Expand the following registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches

Delete the Compress old files registry key.
Quit Registry Editor.

try running the disk cleanup

The file'Compress old files' does not exist under volume caches string.

try this...
Open Notepad

copy and paste the below into notepad

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files]

From within notepad select the file menu then "save as"

Save as CDisk.Reg and save to desktop.

Open desktop file and double click on the file to run

When prompted to merge into registry say yes

Reboot and try disk cleanup.

lets try a new path...
click on my computer...right click on your C drive...then properties...
then click on the disk cleanup button..
