My Son-in-law's PC, which is 2nd hand, came with 20 "Unwanted Programmes" which were found after a scan with McAfee AV.

It can't remove or disinfect or quarantine any of them. I have tried a scan and tried to remove them in safe mode.

The progs are all assocated with Internet Explorer.

5 of them chosen at random are:

C:\\WINDOWS\bootstat.dat:jzawg C:\\WINDOWS\DteInstall.log:wjjmg C:\\WINDOWS\evyzfx.dat:imakt C:\\WINDOWS\regedit.exe:khgen C:\\WINDOWS\yluqc.txt.hhoes

I have worked through all the points suggested on this site before posting this log file. Ewido apprears to be the only one to sucessfully delete them although the progs/files reappear after a reboot.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Hi wint

Sorry for the delay in response. The forum has been very busy lately.

We can certainly help you but as your original post is over a week old, could you please post a fresh HijackThis log for review. The HijackThis log you posted has some detail missing that may help in the removal of the problems.

If you have already fixed your machine or received help elsewhere please post back and let us know.

Thank you

Sorry about the delay responding. My daughter & son-in-law are on the far side of the Atlantic from me (I'm in England) so this is now by "remote control"! I was visiting them last week.

Here's the updated log:

Thanks.

Wint.

Hi Wint

You have the remains of an About:Blank infection. It appears that ewido has removed most of it but we'll go through some extra steps to make sure it is gone.

Please download some extra tools we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winme

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. It would be a good idea to print these steps out so you have them in front of you while you are working on it.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up, straight after the beep, continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode - Choose Safe Mode (no networking) and Windows XP. You'll know you are in Safe Mode because the screen has large letters and Safe Mode is written in each corner.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run a full ewido scan while still in Safe Mode and save the report.

Open HijackThis and click on Do System Scan Only. Close any open windows, and fix the following items, if they are still there. They may not be:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://4-counter.com/?a=2&b=tut
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://4-counter.com/?a=2&b=tut
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {237AA178-C3BC-4f67-A8BB-D8BC14BA0B89} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\remove_me.dll (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {26CBF141-7D0F-46E1-AA06-718958B6E4D2} - http://download.ebay.../US/install.cab

O19 - User stylesheet: (file missing)
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper (%AFe$6@() - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msub32.exe (file missing)

Open windows explorer and delete the following files. They may not all still be there:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msub32.exe--file only
C:\WINDOWS\System32\remove_me.dll--file only

http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Then restart your computer one more time and post a new HJT log as well as the About:Buster log I asked you to save earlier and the Report from ewido so we can check that the infection is removed.
