Hey guys,

Major problem... my trusty Dell inspirion 9100 wont boot using SP3 XP Pro.....
the story goes like this:
i was on the net facebook and what not, i look at my clock and i was expected to be out on the town in like 5 mins. so i think that i will come home and continue comptuing so i only standby.... so about 5 hours later i come home quite drunk and i want to watch some funny youtube things (as you do). and my comp was running high CPU and the video was all choppy. so i figure i'll restart.... so i turn off completley then turn back on.. when i start up i have like the dell thing on the screen with a loading bar underneath....
this completes like normal then it is ment to come up on the windows logo but no, black screen with a white horozontal coursor like thing just blinking away at me...
that is my problem and this is what i have try so far. gone into recovery console done the 'chkdsk' 'chkdsk /p' and 'chkdsk /p /r' so after trying them i restart each time.. nothing happens... so i look on the net for a solution and it says i should go into the windows setup thing... so i do that, and it takes ages to complete and a few time it comes up with ' (a file) ' cannot copy press enter to restart or esc to skip. so i press enter for all of them maybe 5 and the last one i pressed enter about 5 time then it still didnt work so i press esc to skip.. still dosent work

That is my problem, i would love a hand with it. i'm pretty good with computers so it wont be too frustration for you to help me.
anyways thanks guys i appreciate it!

Tim

Most (but not all)chances are that either your RAM or hard disk are faulty. Download memtest86, create a bootable CD and run the program for at least one complete pass. There should not be any errors.

Find the make of your hard disk and download the appropriate diagnostic tool from here. Create a bootable CD and run a full test of your hard disk.

Ok, i appreciate the help.
I upgraded RAM about 2 years ago to 2GB (origionally there was 1GB) so i put the orig 1GB back in and tried with the current HD same story..
I had another HDD in it but it started knocking (sound) so i replaced that to a segate HDD (current one now) so i put the knocking one in and same story... i wasnt sure which program on that list you have is the right one to download.

By your description it likes as if the RAM is not causing the problem. Regarding the HD: Read on the disk (not the old knocking one) the name of the manufacturer and post it here. We'll find for you the correct tool.

Download Seagate's diagnostic tool from here. Download V 1.10 (text), burn the ISO file to a CD, boot with the CD and run a complete test.

Going back to your first post: If you try to reinstall windows (as I under sand you did) and you get notifications about some files cannot be copied after performing the format stage in the installation, in most cases it is a faulty RAM, faulty HD, faulty installation CD or faulty CD drive. If all these are tested and found OK then you suspect the CPU and motherboard.

1: Please run memtst to make sure (I know you replaced RAM module) that there is no problem on this part.

2: Try to run setup with another CD drive.

3: If you have another XP installation CD of any version try to use it for temporary installation and see what the results are.

Alright, nah i didnt try to re-install windows i tryed to use the recovery console.. and then the windows upgrade thing..
i dont have another CD drive
or any other XP CD's so pretty much i think i am stuffed.... i am due for a new computer anyway that one has been giving me nothing but problems for the 5 somthing years i have had it (i got it second hand too).

i dont think i will bother with the mem test. i will just take it to a computer store and see what they have to say about it.
Thankyou very much for you help, much obliged
you have a wonderful ordanisation here
Tim

i'll be here for my next problem when that arises
Thanks again
