Upon every boot of the system, after the welcome screen, the screen is black, with only a visible cursor. However, by starting task manager, I am able to end process explorer.exe and restart it, achieving a temporary fix. Yet, when I reboot, the problem is there once again. I am frightened for the health of my computer.

Hi,
I am sorry to mention Windows 7 when you use Windows Vista. But you have same steps for Windows Vista. You can try the same steps and let me know.
