error 1706 is usually due to the Windows Installer not able to find certain files and is usually related to Microsoft Office not being properly install, it could be a trial version expired, installed from a network file or that you need to use the office cd to run certain function or more.

A possible solution is to uninstall Office and reinstall it in its full version (all on the hd and no feauture program to be runned from the cd/dvd-rom, if this does not help then some of your registry entry might be corrupted and you need more expert help (then me) to clean those.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Please follow the below mentioned steps:

1). Close all of the error messages such as:
# Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD-Rom drive. For other potential solutions to the problem, see c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\Setup.hlp.
# Installation ended prematurely because of an error.
# Fatal error during installation.

2). Leave the correct Microsoft Office XP CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.

3). Start Microsoft Office XP Setup by doing one of the following:
* Use the "install on first use" component that you previously attempted to use.
* Run Microsoft Office XP Setup from the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
* Attempt to use the clip art that you previously attempted to use.
