G'day my system specs are in my signature.

Whenever I open Nero 7 to burn a DVD Outlook Express (which I don't use and only has a compact check count of 49) flashes up its compression message for 0.2 of a second before I can even reply to the dialog box.

I am using MCC 03RG20 DVD -R which are BASE brand (re-badged Verbatim)

I get intermittent write error at speeds from 2x - 18x. When burn fails I get a system busy "switch to busy program" dialog box. When I "switch-to" it brings up the start menu. Does this imply an issue with explorer.exe?

I have used this brand of disks successfully for at least 70 previously successful burns.

I tried using "CD Burner XP" it reported successful burns but there were errors in the resultant DVD_VIDEO still. I get a successful error free burn 1/10 times. Other times it reports successful burns but there is an error in random places within the video. The ripped DVD on the HDD error free.

I've bought 4 spindles of these discs so I'll have to swap discs with a mate to rule out DVD media. Other possibilities are:
*Burner is on the way out (failing and need a new one, I have no spare to test)
*Malware etc?
