Hello and thank you for attempting to help me.

I recently was aided in another forum in successfully eliminating a nasty malware, but in the process I have lost my sound. It was not due to any advice that was given to me.

I had, on my own, previously deleted a wrong file (wdmaud.sys) in the drivers, but was able to get the sound going again after allowing windows to download the proper driver.

However, now the sound is gone again. I've tried several things, but to no avail.

Life without sound bites. Thanks. :)

go here and get adobe flash player and adobe shockwave player..
if you use firefox then go here and get the plugins for both

go to youtube do you get sound
if your still having trouble try uninstalling them and then download and reinstall them

if you don't have a xp cd you will have to borrow one from a friend or coworker...
it has to be the same flavor of xp you have installed...IE: if you have xp pro...the one you borrow has to be xp pro


To do this click on start...run...then type in...sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.


If you don't have Windows CD...

click on Start... then Run
type in regedit and press enter

Navigate to the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

you want is...SourcePath

It has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now reboot your computer and try sfc /scannow again...

:) have uninstalled and reinstalled shockwave and adobe player twice - no joy.

ran sfc /scannow twice - no joy.

i have sound everywhere else (cd's, my own downloaded AVI's) but not when playing anything on the internet. i've doublechecked that Quicktime is not the default player for flash.

i've checked and doublechecked the codecs and i have reloaded my sound drivers twice.

i've troubleshooted all of adobe's suggestions more than twice. i have been very thorough. :)

here's what was going on the last time i had sound.

Rorschach112 the friendly ghost had successfully walked me through eliminating a nasty google redirect malware/rootkit problem that he described as "a relatively new infection, hijacks the MBR and your ports. mixture of combofix and helpasstfix got rid of it."

i attempted to uninstall combofix, per his instructions, but the program would not run. i then followed these instructions:

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.


there was no sound for videos after that. here's another possible clue. when i open my sound volume, i do not hear the usual tone when lowering or raising the volume bar.

it almost feels like i have some kind of virus - but AVG, MBAM, and my other scans say i'm OK.

take a look at the GIF i accompanied with this please. i was troubleshooting my plug and play service and was denied entry. is this normal? i also have noticed that after running combofix and help assistant, that my AVG is now under SYSTEM in the task manager rather than my user name. i have also noticed that my priviliges have been denied when trying to troubleshoot audio drivers.

OHHH and i haven't told you the worst part about all of this either - THIS is my gf's PC. i told her: "don't worry, i'll help you get the google redirect off there, i have a few geekie friends." :)

what is my next step? i don't want to get another gf.
