Use System Restore to restore your system back to a date prior to when the problem occurred:... as of last week my dvd maker was working fine (vista), ... if i can just get it back to how it was originally working.
- Click the Start button, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
- In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
- In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
- Click Finish.
When the computer restarts, the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

This is one of the very reasons why a strict backup routine is so important. Because without it, it's like shooting at a silent target in the dark. You might hit it, but more than likely not.
