hello, as of last week my dvd maker was working fine (vista), i used a dvd rw instead of the usual dvd r i was happily using and now my dvd maker will not burn anything. it looks like it's working, but when i put the disc in the dvd player it says disc error. i'm looking to see if i can get help in just getting back my dvd maker to it's original settings. it was so easy to use, just dragged and dropped my video into it and voila i had a working disc i could play on my dvd player. i've been trying to use nero 7 and power to go and it is just to difficult to use. you need to convert files to another format. can i get it back to how it was before i stupidly used the dvd rw? help would be greatly appreciated as i'm at my wits end, trying to figure out how to use other programs i don't need if i can just get it back to how it was originally working. thanks much in advance for any help.

Use System Restore to restore your system back to a date prior to when the problem occurred:

• Click the Start button, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.
  
  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
  
  
• In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
  
  
• In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
  
  
• Click Finish.
  
  When the computer restarts, the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

thanks, i know how to restore it, the problem is it won't let me pick a date. the furthest date is 5/6, and my problem started about a week and 1/2 ago. won't let me go back. is there any way i can pick my own date? all this did was put back some programs i had uninstalled and knocked out my wireless, which i had to fix. i really don't want to start from scratch and do a complete system recovery to get my dvd maker back to how it was working originally - there has to be a less complicated solution. very frustrating...

Yes, with the untold thousands of files, configuration and registry settings in Windows, it can be extremely complicated, frustrating, and sometimes impossible to try to figure out exactly where a single problem might lie.

This is one of the very reasons why a strict backup routine is so important. Because without it, it's like shooting at a silent target in the dark. You might hit it, but more than likely not.

Anyway, one thing you might try is: in Device Manager, uninstall your DVD/CD-ROM drive(s), then reboot. When Windows loads back up it will discover your 'new' hardware and set it back up. With any luck that may solve the problem.

thanks, but the "With any luck that may solve the problem." kind of scares me. At this point, don't know what to do. I'll eventually have to take it to micro center to fix, but at this time I cannot afford it. Thought someone might help me, but I've asked everywhere I could online. thanks for your time...

Looks like clicking that button would simply restore the default Windows icon for your DVD drive folder.

noted, thought (hoped) i had found the solution. guess i'm going to have to use my recovery drive and start from scratch... so not wanted to do that as it is only the dvd maker that is not working. thanks

If you intend on using your "recovery drive and start from scratch", why not try my suggestion first? Uninstall your DVD/CD-ROM drive(s) in Device Manager then reboot. When Windows loads back up it should discover your 'new' hardware and set it back up for you. If it works, it'll save a heck of a lot of time.

hello, didn't have to do what you suggested as it seems to have resolved itself. as i had mentioned before, after my dvd maker stopped working someone suggested i install nero 7. what a mistake, nero is very pervasive and took over everything. i did manage to make 1 dvd after converting in avi into vob, which is just a long process. i tried uninstalling nero, but it wouldn't let me after i did a recovery. i had to reinstall it and then uninstall again. today, i was going to do what you suggested, but said to myself, let me give it one more try. what's another ruined dvd, i burned a movie and didn't even try to play it as i was sure it wasn't going to play. just stuck it in my dvd player and it worked. thanks for your help.
