Hello,

Periodic popup windows are happening every few seconds where the popup windows advise that various viruses are present and requests that an unknown web based antivirus site be used to clean the viruses. Blocking or attempted blocking of existing programs, e.g. AVG, zonealarm, etc. This PC had been running ok before my spouse used it for some email. She said a window came up about a 'virus' and she ok'ed the window request. Trouble since then - a few days ago.

This is happening on a laptop PC running XP with SP3 installed. I cannot access the internet due to this virus on the subject PC. I can boot into safe mode (still no internet access) and get access to USB flashdrive with some malware programs. I was able to copy over TFC in safe mode from flashdrive and run it; it seemed to remove many temp files; little change as to existing virus. I could not figure out how to get MBAM to install from a flashdrive without being able to get its file definitions from internet using the subject PC. How can MBAM (or alternative program) be imported via flashdrive without being able to get internet access from the affected PC?

AVG was installed on the subject PC at the time of infection. I ran AVG scan in safe mode without it being able to identify or remove the current virus.

I was able to run hijackthis and am attaching its log file.

I would appreciate help with this. Not having internet access from subject PC adds to the diffuculity.

Thanks in advance,
Charles (tatrader)

Hi I would like you to copy this programme to the infected computer and run it

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    mv61xx.sys
    nvraid.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

On completion of this run go to normal mode and let me know what the current situation is

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyEnable" = 1
    IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No CLSID value found.

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

THEN

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I followed the above instructions, and attach the text log files from OTL and combofix. I am including an "extra" file associated with OTL, but I do not know if it one generated after the last run or before, so I included it. On the combofix run, I turned off zonealarm and tried to turn off avg from the system tray icon but combofix reported it was still running. I went to the task manager under services and stopped or tried to stop all the avg related services that I could identify. I then let combofix run.

After the restart when running OTL above, I let the subject computer come back up in normal mode and ran combofix in normal mode. No more pop up windows or any other unusual behavior that I saw. I am able to access the internet from the subject computer now and programs appear to operate normally.

THANKS!

I read the POST in this forum about about various protection programs and their ratings. I have been using a set of free programs: avg, zonealarm, spybot with teatimer, and periodically run ad-aware. What are your thoughts about the currently better set of free malware programs to be running?

For the anti-spyware I would currently recommend MBAM - which I will be asking you to run next. Antivirus and firewalls are personel preferences - what one person likes another may hate :)

OK lets check for orphans now

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The subject laptop computer is running well without any observable problems. No sign of the virus/malware issue which caused me to start this thread.

THANKS

I will continue to run AVG, Zonealarm, and will run MBAM periodically.

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 20.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
