Hi,
Most people go to school for a few years.
Look for a course in software development.

Hi sarahw,
The question is not specific enough for an easy answer. What sort of game do you wish to code? How do you want to deliver it to the player.
Their are two ways to start.
In either case, game development requires two key abilities.

Their are two ways to start.
- Decide which technology interests you -- flash? java? etc., and then design the game.
- Design the game and choose the technology that would best fit the game.
In either case, game development requires two key abilities.
- Someone with artistic ability. Even the most simplest of games will be more enjoyable if the colors matched and the web page had style.
- Someone who knows how to write computer programs. That is, after all, the only way effective to tell the computer what to do when the user presses the left arrow.
