Hi, thanks for your reply. I still have problems and my IE is hijacked by this ad/sypware. This is very annoying and I would think there should be some law passed to avoid such things on the web - guess this is still so new and the guidlines are being defined. I have attached the latest copy of the hijackthis log. Hope you can help me to get rid of this bug from my system. And again, thanks so much for taking time out to help - you guys are the best and it is very much appreciated!!

Hi Ratu,

The first thing you need to do is download a program for me from the link below.

Registry search tool. Scroll down and click on the pink arrow next to Registry Search tool, then click on the download icon to the right.
Unzip it and run it. If your antivirus inteferes you may have to disable script blocking in the antivirus. Put the following in the search box:

stsheets

Post the results.

Also::

Open hijackthis and then open the Misc Tools Section.

In the StartupList section make sure the "List also minor section (full)" and "List empty sections (complete) boxes are checked.

Then click the "Generate StartupList log" button. Copy and paste the results into your next response.

Thanks for your speedy response usetobe!
I followed your instructions below and here is the result from the registry search tool:

-----------------------------------
REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "stsheets" 5/31/2005 9:42:12 PM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\vdmindvw]
"StsPath"="\\??\\C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\vdmindvw]
"StsPath"="\\??\\C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vdmindvw]
"StsPath"="\\??\\C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles]
"User Stylesheet"="C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles]
"User Stylesheet"="C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1547161642-1343024091-1957994488-1003\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles]
"User Stylesheet"="C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles]
"User Stylesheet"="C:\\WINDOWS\\stsheets.dat"
------------------------------

For the Hijackthis, I ensured the "List also minor section (full)" and "List empty sections (complete) boxes are checked.

But when I clicked the "Generate StartupList log" button, it created an empty log.

BTW, I have followed all the direction given at the top of this forumn:
Do you suspect a malware (Spyware, Virus, Trojan) infection? Please start here:
http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

Your help is always appreciated!

Thanks,
Ratu.

Hi Ratu,

I have one major concern left and that is the fact that you have no XP Service Pack Updates.

I recommend you Update XP to SERVICE PACK 2 immediately. LINK TO SP2
Without this update you leave yourself vulnerable and wide open to reinfection.

The good news is.........

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
