I THINK I've been successful in ridding her computer of AURORA and ADWARE.BETTERINTERNET.

I have not been successful in removing the LOP TOOLBAR

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am fallible also. I am not paid to do this; I am a volunteer, giving my time freely.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

I can’t see any evidence of LOP on the system, but I can clearly see 5 different infections that need attention, and a file that I hope you can shed some light on. This is it: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\kindhtmthatnurb\FILEBORE.exe. Let me know if you recognise it in your reply.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Spy Sweeper and Norton Autoprotect from running during the fix, they may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Ewido Security Suite
Hoster

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).

• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The programme will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the programme scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete this folder (if present) using Windows Explorer:

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

While trying to remove the three things you told us to remove, we encountered this:

The specified module could not be found.

Search Assistant-My Search-A large empty white box appears and this is what the title bar says when I try to remove it from Add/Remove.

We were able to remove the viewpoint media player though.


Is it ok, while in safe mode, to remove unused programs such a the google toolbar, an outdated version of spyware that can't be updated, and other programs such as that?

Phil, I'm letting you know that I sent a bit of money to you through paypal earlier today. It is for appreciation for all the help you've given me today.

The log file above is for my teenaged daughters computer, but now MY computer is infected with a trojan horse. I'll post another topic and leave the log file there. This is really getting annoying.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated.

The C:\word.exe file is still showing up in your log as a startup entry. It may be perfectly OK, but I can't understand why it is in startup.

The programmes I asked you to uninstall, should be uninstallable in both normal and safe modes. We tend to use safe mode since fewer drivers get loaded which normally means that they leave less behind afterwards, but if they can be uninstalled in normal mode, then that is OK too.

You may uninstall the google toolbar also if you wish, although it is not malicious in anyway.

This PC has two antispyware programmes running in real-time which is not good. You should uninstall one of them.

Please consider installing Firefox as a default browser, it offers a greater degree of security over Internet Explorer.

I note you have Metallica helping you on your PC problem. He is brilliant; you're in very good hands.

On this PC, I mentioned two real-time antispyware programmes, Ewido and Spy Sweeper. I can't really tell you which is best since they are different and have variancies between them. It really is up to you to decide, but one is good, two is bad. Whichever you choose to be running in real-time, you have to disable the other one and use it for "on demand" scans. There will be a control for this from within the programme.

Norton is your antivirus (different from antispyware) programme, which should always run in real time and be updated frequently.

Each time I run one of my spyware programs, I come up with a few entries regarding searchassistant. I decided to do a search of my internet explorer files and this is what I came up with. Is there anything here that I need to be concerned with, if so, what must I do with it and most importantly, how do I do it?

Ok Phil, I went ahead and got rid of spysweeper since it was outdated. I'll post a final hijack this log to make sure that all is well, and if it is, then we can call this one a done deal.

I don't even know about this program. I think I had it a few years ago, but it's not on my computer anymore. If it is, I have no knowledge of it.

Hello again

Your log is still clean. It is always better to uninstall programmes if possible, rather than just deleting them. However I can't see Spam Washer in your uninstall list. Please use your search facility to locate the folder and files for it; there may be an uninstall programme within the folder.

To get rid of the other entries, please follow these brief instructions:

Please open Spybot S & D, Update it, Immunize and then Run. When it has finished scanning, it will present you with a screen with any items to be corrected. Please check the ones in green only and click Fix. If any are in memory, Spybot will ask your permission to scan again at next strtup; please allow it to do so.

Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark against each of the following:
