I think he installed it with a vista home DVD he had

Does your Vista installation sound legit? For instance, do you have any problems with updating Windows?
How long ago was Vista reinstalled?
What AV and firewall do you use?

How do I know how many sticks of ram I have / start with only one?

Is this desktop, or laptop? What's the brand and model?
Have you added any RAM, or is the computer in its original state?

Its a Dell XPs Pro 420 Desktop...still in original state

With an issues like yours, it's rather hard to pinpoint the problem using one shot, so we have to start somewhere.

I have no anti virus installed

I suggest, we go back to my advice from my reply #8 - malware forum.

Again, I cant imagine its a virus problem, given I've ran like 4 full system checks in the 9 days since my reinstall without any problems showing up

So I should post an OTL log in the Malware forum?

Please do.
Before we go anywhere else, we need to know, your computer is clean.

I already have a thread over there on a somewhat unrelated issue http://www.geekstogo...er-t277733.html

Should I use that thread or start a new one?

Thanks again for your help

You can continue in that thread, but you have to read preliminaries: http://www.geekstogo...uide-t2852.html and post required logs.

make and model would be nice but since this is a fresh install...
run chkdsk /r...instructions are here...
go here and get everest home...install and launch it...click the + by computer...click on sensor...get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

Its a Dell XPS 420 Dekstop

I'll run chdisk tonight

I downloaded that program, but under Sensor it just shows a grey empty screen. The other screens contain data. I dont get it? There is an option to generate a report but thats a really long text report. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again

I'm not sure I did it correctly, because it was suuuuper fast, the screen lasted about 5 seconds, said the disk was clean and then Windows booted like normal

I followed the instructions correct though, I believe

everest is old and out of date[hasn't been updated since 06] likely doesn't reconize you hardware

there are 5 stages of chkdsk /r
its not fast...it can take several hours to complete for large hard drives...
did you see this screen..

1: Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the C drive icon, choose "Properties".

2: When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section.

3: When that little window loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click on "Start Now".

4: A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer, so......Restart the computer. Error Checking will run automatically after the restart but after it's finished, it will restart into Windows automatically.
