I have been running Win XP SP2, Norton Internet Security, Spysweeper & Spybot. I have subsequently downloaded a bunch of additional spyware/malware cleaners but can't seem to get rid of this stuff. My HJT log below:

Hello,

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:

• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
• From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
• After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
• Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

Please download the Nail/Aurora Spyware Fix from NoIdea.US. (Alternate download link: dknoppix mirror)

Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

• Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you the Boot Menu appears.
• Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
• When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd that you unzipped earlier. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next, run Ewido again.

• Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
• If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
• When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Then run HijackThis, click Scan, and place a checkmark by the following item:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Now, run CCleaner.

• Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
• helpers, if user is running Firefox: ,then click on the "Applications" tab and uncheck "Cookies" under "Firefox".
• Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Justin - thanks very much for your help on this. I think that I did everything correctly but my SpySweeper was still finding something upon reboot...it was asking about blocking "ggjynhw". Can you please take a peek and see if I still have some other gook?

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis


Reboot your computer.

Also, run at least 2 of these online virus scans:

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings, save and post the log
RAV online scan<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust Antivirus Web Scan<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Bitdefender ScanOnline<<<Place a check by everything under 'Scan Options'.
Command on Demand

Also run an online trojan scan here: http://www.trojanscan.com/

Well, Justin, thanks for your help. This is my son's PC and what can I say....it's a mess with junk he's picked up trolling the net. As to your prior post:

I ran Housecall and it was clean.

I ran Panda ActiveScan. It found 2 things. See log below.

I ran the online trojan scan. There wasn't a way to cut/paste the results but it found 4 cookies that it didn't like:

easy-hit-counters(1).txt
gamespy(1).txt
www.countercentral(2).txt

It also found process.exe -- which I am pretty sure is just the nailfix tool

& finally it found c:\windows\sylupwr.exe
which is the same thing that Panda found.

Unzip the program

Click on Start, Programs, CleanUp!, CleanUp!.
A dialog will appear. Click on the button labeled "CleanUp!"

I ran cleanup. Everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for all of your help! I have installed Parental Controls, loads of spyware tools plus anti-virus. Any other suggestions?

This is my second go-round with spyware on my son's computer. Last time, before I found you all, I ended reformatting his system. He had a bad case of coolwebsearch and cwshredder wasn't touching it! I have threatened to kick him off the net.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  
• Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  
• Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
