Have you tried using autoruns to check things out, http://technet.micro...s/bb963902.aspx
Is windows fully up to date ie sp3 installed, doing this may fix the problem.
Other than that I would consider a clean install of xp.
BTW Ive mentioned updating to sp3 as support for sp2 ends on July 13th 2010.
