My b/f has a Dell optiplex GX280 when he boots it up the windows dosent load and it goes to a black screen that says windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt:/windows/system32/config/system .then it says you can attepnt to repair this file by starting windows set up, using the original set up cd room, select R at the first screen to repair.is there a way to fix this problem without having the disk. cuz he dont have it. :)

It is possible to repair it but you will need to loan a copy of the
same edition of xp (xp home edition for example).
Another option is to format the HDD & install another O/S.
Good luck
