I ran "sfc /scannow" from the cd and it appeared to do a little bit but no real difference to the start up - but I didn't know there was an actual repair. I'll give it a go.

Also, do you remember the other computer with a virus I mentioned - I'm trying to link it with this computer on a small officer network so I can run Norton accross the network to scan and repair viruses on the other pc, but even though I've shared the c: drive on the other pc, it won't let me even see it on the network.

You could slave the hard drive from the other system in your computer and then run a virus scan on it.
