Wierd Virus!

I've found a wierd virus on my pc.
When I originally found them using Norton - they were listed as W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen (twice)
W32.Randex.gen (twice)
W32.Spybot.Worm

Since the first recognition by Norton and it's failure to remove them although I had the latest definition installed, Norton has failed to pick them up.
I've followed Symantec guides to edit the registry, scan in safe mode, I've used an on line scanner which will not operate because when I go online and search for the virus names in Google and then click on Symantec or any other fix site, internet explorer opens about fifty or sixty windows and the pc virtually halts.
I've purchased and installed Norton Antivirus Professional to no avail.
I've purchased installed and run Registry Mechanic without any change.(although now I have "p2esocks_1014.dll" missing!!)

If anyone can help I'd be most grateful

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

The virus i mentioned is not on my pc, it is on my business partners pc. I have tried all of the scanners you mentioned in your reply, but I am struggling to get into google.co.uk let alone those.
When and if I get into them and it could take an hour or more due to the speed the machine is now running, the virus detects it and will open 50 to 60 internet explorer windows and then you can't do a thing.

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Real <- this folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\p2esocks_1014.dll

Reboot your PC.

I have tried the suggestion above, but my machine is really slow at the windows Welcome screen (ionce you have clicked on the user name - it takes roughly 3 minutes to get to the desktop)

well it might not be your log, and just be your start-ups, please select Start>All Programs> look for the folder Startup>Right Click> Open

see how many programs are in there and then we can go about removing them if nesssasary

Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.0002.1001\en-gb\msnappau.exe

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.0002.1001\en-gb\msnappau.exe listing should show up in the window. Then in the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

With only HijackThis running, scan and when complete, remove the following entries (if still there) by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Changed all that was suggested, ran the web shredder program (it didn't appear to find anything), rebooted and it's still the same.

All of the software I've used so far appears to run ok, it's just still the start up takes a long time, whereas when the p2esocks message was coming up, my desktop appeared almost instantly after i'd chosen the user name. Have we deleted something we shouldn't have?

Before the p2esocks appeared, i ran a program called registry mechanic - could this be why i've got this problem?

Nope.

Before the p2esocks appeared, i ran a program called registry mechanic - could this be why i've got this problem?

Never been a big fan of that program, I think it's too aggressive. I'm pretty sure there's an "undo" option.

You could also try bootvis to identify where your system is hanging:

Hello again

I've tried the software you've suggested and undoing the reg mechanic but still to no avail.

Everything operates a lot quicker now except for the start up.

When you click the user on the welcome screen, it hangs for at least 60 seconds, where as before it was almost instantly displaying my desktop etc and beginning to start programs. When it is hanging, there is not hard drive activity at all. It's a bit wierd!

Any other thoughts?

Just to make things even more annoying, my a: drive (floppy) has decided it wants to look for a disk (and there isn't one in there!!) every 30 seconds or so.
I'm jusy about to throw it all out of the window!! HELP!
