I have an old thread about this topic here:

I believe the virus is attached to the file userinit.exe in the system32 folder. When I deleted the file during the help I was getting from the last post everything cleared up and the virus was stopped. Now when I try opening AVI files or even folders in this particular folder, it has come back, just like before. I tried deleting the file again but it keeps coming back now.

Please tell me how to delete this file permanently or tell me how I can repair it.

The CWShredder did not find any problems.

I recently reformated my hard drive and reinstalled windows. The problem is back but it came back after I installed SP2 so I don't think it has anything to do with being infected by the other computer in the house that is infected.

This problem is very strange. Sometimes it pops up when I open the folder in which the media files are. Sometimes it pops up when I try to right-click on them or open them. But sometimes it doesn't pop up at all and I can view all my video files. I'm pretty sure this virus came from downloading video files off people from bittorent, it's the only way I can view my TV shows since I work evenings.

It's SP2. It seems to be a bug for some users. What I recommend doing is uninstall SP2 and install SP1a instead. Keep getting the Windows updates as usual, just don't upgrade to SP2.

See if you have any more problems now. If not, post back saying so...I will then close this topic and mark it resolved.

Is it safe to run on SP1a instead of SP2 since SP2 has more security enhancements?

It's definitely best to have SP2 installed, but SP1a should have all the critical patches that you need. SP2 has the security center feature which has a better firewall and could also detect if you have a antivirus program and firewall program.

I think if you have a antivirus and firewall program already, you are all good. Just make sure to check for regular updates...just don't install SP2.

Tell me how this went so I can close this topic if it's resolved.

I have AVG Free but I don't have a firewall program. Do you know of any firewall programs that I can download so I can still be protected?

Yes

Download ZoneAlarm for your firewall. I have used it for years and have no complaints about it. Great firewall and also free for personal use (look for the Free Download link, you have to look around for a minute or so to find it).

So far the problem hasn't occured again but sometimes it disappears briefly. But if it comes back I will give you a PM but for now it looks good.
