I've run multiple spyware scans and virus scans but I continue to have the issue. I use Firefox but I'm repeatedly getting IE popups and my volume will be repeatedly turned down. I've attached my HijackThis log in the hopes someone can help me.

Thanx in advance.

Hello, eribs4e!

:)

My name is Elster and I will be helping you fix your computer.

Please keep in mind that very rarely will a computer be "dis-infected" on the first sweep. The absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean, so please stick with me until I give you the All Clear!

I recommend that you save and print each of my posts, as there will be times when you will not be able to be online to access them.

Step 1:

MBRCheck

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

Step 2:

OTL

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Custom Scan box, paste in the following:

    netsvcs
    drivers32 /all
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\*.wt
    %systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini2
    %systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.*
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.bak1
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.ini
    %systemroot%\system32\*.jpg
    %systemroot%\*.scr
    %systemroot%\*._sy
    %APPDATA%\Adobe\Update\*.*
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Favorites\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\*.*
    %PROGRAMFILES%\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Update\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2help.dll /md5
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Step 3:

Reply

Things I need to see in your reply:
  • MBRCheck log
  • OTL log
Thanks!

Step 2:

ComboFix

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you don't know how to disable them then just continue on.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Elster, you indicate for me to select Windows Vista as the option...I'm running XP. Do you still want me to select the Vista option?

Hello eribs4e!

Looks like that may have taken care of it! How is your computer running now?

Step 1:

Malwarebytes

Please run a quick scan with Malwarebytes, remove any threats found, then paste the log in your reply.

Step 2:

Online Scan

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Step 3:

Reply

Things I need to see in your reply:
  • MBAM log
  • ESET log
  • How is your computer running?
Thanks!

Hi Elster, Sorry for the delayed response, but I tried for a few days to get back to this and the forums were down? Either way, everything is all clear and the annoying popups are now gone.

Thank you very much for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Elder

Hello Elder!

Glad you made it back. Unfortunately, we had some hackers going after our site, so we had to make a few changes. I'm glad to hear that your computer is running okay, but I would like to see the logs I asked for in my last post. I just like to make sure that all is completely gone. :)

The choice, of course, is completely up to you so I'll leave this thread open for a few days. If you don't respond, I'll go ahead and close it.

Thanks!
