My 22 year old son is a Chemical Engineer major. This is his senior year and the University is dismantling their Engineering IT lab....so he has to have a laptop that will run all the Chem E programming he needs.

He can spend up to $1,000.

Any recommendations..... (one that is "drop proof" would also be nice...he is a little clutsy)

Most any newer laptops will run intensive programs easily. I prefer the H-P laptops, but if you really want tough get a Panasonic Toughbook. I was selling older Toughbooks i bought at a auction and my demo toughbook i dropped from waist high at least a 100 times just to prove to people that they would still keep running. I just turned the laptop on the pretended i was going to hand it over to the customer. Funny how it always got dropped to the ground. I did crack a LCD screen when it flipped a little too far with the laptop open and running. Screen worked but it was dead about 1/3 of the left side.
