Password stealing viruses

I don't know too much about this, so I was hopeing for a bit of info. What is the purpose of the password stealing viruses? If you have one on the computer, would it just steal your user names, passwords and info? Would the people that make these then take your info create a profile page on a social networking site and then while working on your computer (unaware of what is going on) pop ups come up from that profile page creating a list of them in your history? Sounds like odd questions, but that was the explaination that I got for finding the history the way I did.
