I have an Emachines T3256 and Windows won't start, can't access any menus, not responding at all, etc. Error message says Windows could not start because following file missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252.nls You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows set up using original CDROM... I also get another screen that says Primary Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T Bad... a screen that gives me options I guess to restart:SAFE MODE, LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION (most recent settings that worked), START WINDOWS NORMALLY. I tried them all and nothing works. Windows XP came preinstalled on my computer and a original Windows XP Setup CDROM is not available from Emachines. If I can't fix it is there a way to save the files, pictures, etc on the computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please see the attached link.
There are other ways round this but they are a litle complicated.
Personally I think when, even if you manage this, you will then get another message as Windows fails to load.

Recovery Console Disc Image
http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso

You will need a program to burn the CD which is an ISO image. Do you have this.

Macboatmaster- The mocrosoft support wasn't much help.

I have not yet clicked on the link for the recovery console disk image... not sure if my computer here at work has that ability to burn the CD. That's not the same as copying it to a CD-RW disk is it?

One of the error messages I got was Primary Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T Status Bad - does that mean my hard disk is bad and repairing Windows XP won't work?

Thanks for your help...

The Microsoft support link was of help, if you had read it, as it tells you in detail how to replace that system32 file.
This will be done from the Recovery Console. You will need it later.
Dealing first with the hdd error SMART, this provides early warning of disk failure. It could be surface errors, or using SMART it could be a bearing failure etc. (Overheating or shocks is a prime cause of this failure)
There is no way of knowing at the moment if the disc has failed or will fail imminently.
Back up all your data if possible, using this disk as a slave disk and then you can at least save your personal files.
Here is the ISO burning program

Further to the above here is the link for UBCD. This will more than likely boot your computer and allow you to make a backup of the files you need or an image to an external hard drive or flash pen for just your personal data.
http://www.ultimateb...m/download.html

You can also run a disk check.
WARNING BE CAREFUL some of the utilities on the disk used incorrectly will wipe the whole disk with just a couple of keystrokes.

I am signing off now will pick it up tonight about 1900hrs UK time

Macboatmaster- Thank you very much for all your help. As I'm sure you can tell, I'm a bit of a novice and some of this is over my head. But I will try to follow your instructions and let you know. I'm getting ready to leave work and might not be able to report back on my success until tomorrow. Thanks again.

Macboatmaster- No luck. I ran the windows xp recovery console, but it stopped on the screen that asks which windows installation would you like to log onto? the sample screen on the recovery console instructions show this - 1: C:\WINDOWS - but all that appears on my screen is c:\> and it stopped, it didn't include the word WINDOWS. I tried it several times... the first time the recovery console was loading it stopped and gave me this error message - File\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7 setup cannot continue. Press any key to continue. I tried loading it a couple more times and both times it stopped at c:\> on the screen thats supposed to ask which windows installation would you like to... I'm not very knowledgable in this area, but it seems like the hard disk is bad... I don't want to take up any more of your time, but want to thank you very much for your posts, I sincerely appreciate your help.

I am sorry it did not work. I can only go back to the suggestion that you slave it and backup OR boot with UBCD that I sent you the link for and run a disk scan from there.
SEE NEXT POST PLEASE

The file I386\Ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7. OR
The file I386\L_intl.nlf could not be loaded. The error code is 7

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if either one of the following conditions is true:

* There are incorrect settings in the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) configuration.

-or-
* One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that is installed on the computer is faulty.
Presuming that you have not altered the BIOS settings, have a look at the ram and if you have two sticks of ram, take one out from the second slot. If that does not work, take the one from the first slot and replace it with the one from the second slot.
There is a chance that it is the ram and not the hard disk.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you need more guidance.
