crashing when using webcam

when i am using a webcam to contact friends and family overseas using internet explorer or firefox as my browsers periodically i lose connection and have to restart webcam as error signal is sent.It was suggested that i buy a microsoft webcam which i have done and increased my memory to 1GB as was also suggested to me.Someone else has suggested i uninstall Internet Explore 8 but have also been told not to do so. Your advice would be appreciated.
