Hi all,

I use my PC for leisure only and solving this infection is beyond my ability so far. So glad I found your site and hope you may help!
This is the original message I received on my desktop when infection first occurred:

IE at 0028:c0011E36VXD VMM (01) + 00010E36. Trojan- spy.HTML.SMIT.FRAUD.c

My desktop originally turned blue and has now turned black. It appears my display options have become limited; no background options. I donČt know what other affects this infection has caused. I have followed all the previous steps suggested in your solutions including Spybot, A-Adware scans. I followed the suggested fixes in both of these scans and I think I saved these logs. Any help or advice is most welcome and thanks for this priceless site..........shackymousa!

You can skip the steps you are sure to have already performed:

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sites.ini
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\helper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

*IMPORTANT* Be sure you know how to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

A registry file to undo most of the changes is available here:
http://metallica.gee...m/smitfraud.reg
Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Then disable Spybot's Teatimer and check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)

Post back with a new log and let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Thanks for responding...a quick question.
I highlighted the list of files you told me to highlight but am unable to past them into full path of files to delete in Killbox.
Once I highlighted the file list I right-clicked on them to copy them to my clipboard but only the first file was copied onto Killbox when I attempted to paste them. I am unsure what you meant when you said .....highlighting them and pressing Control-C:......What is Control-C: mean......
Maybe I am having a Brain F*rt and should know what this means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi again,
I followed all the instructions as you posted. My earlier posted question resolved itself after my Brain F*rt passed!!!!!

Your last instruction was to check three entries in HijackThis. Did you mean to place a check mark next to those entries if they existed......hope so cause that is what I did to the one entry that showed up on HijackThis!

I appreciate your time and help.....hope this works!!!!
