my windows xp pro will nolonger take my password and i have no idea as to how to change it or how to get to the dos promt so that i can just format and reinstall xp. please help

There is no "DOS" in XP. If you want to reformat, set your BIOS to boot from cd and put in your XP disk.

Not sure how much help with passwords is allowed on this board, so, speaking generally, have you tried to boot into safe mode and checked your user accounts? How about booting into the Admin Account?
