My friend has an old dell computer that is practically useless, and he wants to atleast be able to play fable, TLC. so I offered to install into his computer my old geforce FX 5200. Heres the list of things I did, in chronological order.

updated chipset drivers for i845g
installed geforce fx 5200 drivers by downloaded
installed geforce fx 5200 into PCI slot
powered computer, went into bios, and selected primary video controller to "Auto". only other option was "onboard"
Switched Vga cable from the motherboard, to the graphisc card.

the dell loading screen, and the windows xp loading screen both appeared while the vga was going through the graphics card, but when the OS was done loading, all vga ports stopped outputting a signal.

Did i miss a step or do something wrong?

What happens if you try and put everything back to the original setup with just onboard?

I would install new card, then install new drivers upon bootup.
