I just bought a new hp laptop running windows 7. I'm trying to get it to print by sharing with my hp desktop running vista. The printer is a lexmark X5650.

I know just enough to get myself into trouble. I think I have them set up to share. The main message I get on the laptop is wrong port. I tried all the ports in the drop down menu get the same message. I typed in a port name that matched my desk top port name.{does that even make a port?} Some times it flashes like it is going to print & then does nothing. What ever I'm trying to print does not go into the log that showes your items to print {not sure what you call that}.

My old laptop is running xp had no trouble getting it to print with my desk top & it still will prints now.

Thought I would ask for some help before I mess something up.

Thanks

First ensure your network is setup correctly. To do this please follow this guide:

http://www.7tutorial...ows-7-computers

Then you need to setup printer sharing on your vista desktop to share the printer with your network. To do that please follow this guide:

http://www.7tutorial...er-your-network

Once this is setup if you click on network on your windows 7 laptop you should see your vista desktop pc. If you click on the pc name then the shared printer should be visible. Click the printer and it should install automatically. You may need the windows 7 drivers installed first from the manufacturers website but other than that you shouldn't need to select the port.

Hope this helps,
