7 & Vista (fresh install) freezing right after startup

I was using XP but was having some issues (not freezing) so I decided to buy windows 7 and install, but right after start up it will simply freeze for no apparent reason every time. I cant go more than 5 minutes before it freezes and I have to restart. I ran a program from ms to test if my hardware was compatible with windows 7 and it said I shouldn't have any problems. I then installed Vista and I am having the exact same problems. I dont have XP anymore so I cant test that. It seems that when I run in safe mode I dont get the freezing, but I havent tested for more than 10 or so minutes. I have checked to see if there is something physically wrong with the MB and no signs of damage.

specs: Motherboard - MSI P4M890
RAM - 1 x 1gb kingston (i think)
Video card - gforce 7600 GS
CPU - pentium D 2.8 dual core
WLAN - DLink wda 1320

please, tell me anything else you need to know to help. I have absolutely no idea what to do.

Probably a bios upgrade is in order.
Pentium D is like 2005.
I have a 3.0 Pentium D from Gateway.
The bios update from them helped.
Still an occasional blue screen crash when I install driver related software.

If you can run it in safe mode with networking,
use windows update and run it.
Update the graphics card from nvidia's site.

Do you have a manufacturer that you can find downloads?

And since XP was having trouble as well I'd think to test the memory.
W7 has a built in memory checker, have you tried it?
After reboot with Windows 7 there should be choices off what to boot to.
If not, press f2 or whatever it shows for boot options.
