I have a DELL Precision 450 running windows 2000.

Nearly all the web sites I visit now tell me I have to upgrade to a newer browser, but IE6 can't be updated using win 2000.

SO I guess if I can I need to upgrade the OS but have been told it would be better just to buy another computer.

Easy to say when it's not your money being spent. I know this is an old machine but it works fine.

What are my options or do I really even have any?

One of the options would be to use different browser, like Firefox.

Firefox 3.6 currently is supported under Windows 2000, however there was discussion whether it would work at all under Win2k. Whether Firefox 4 will remain Windows 2000 remains to be seen but Mozilla has touted the prospect of dropping support for it ever since April last year. Unfortunately application support for Windows 2000 is drying up to the point where it will just be an operating system in name with no (modern) software that can run on it.

I can confirm, that FF 3.6 works without a problem on my Win 2K installation.

I do use firefox on occasion but I am still stuck with the question: Is it possible to update Windows 2000 at this point in time or would it be a better idea to buy a new system?

This one was not cheap when I bought it and an identical one for my office.

It mostly depends on your computer hardware.

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- how much more RAM can be added
- hard drive size (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")

1 gig ram (I think that is the max.)
Intel Xeo processor

I suppose that I should assume that since my question is unanswered that the possibility of updating my OS is an impossibility.

Thanks I guess.
