OK, went thru all the downloads and scans. However, rdriv.sys trojan is still infecting my system, or at least Norton says so. I have tried to pull up and delete the file that it is embedded in: C:\WINNT\system32\rdriv.sys but I am denied access to said file. Here is a fresh HJT log:

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Ewido appears to have taken care of the bulk of your problems. I will now take care of the rest that has been left behind.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you receive a message and your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Well, I did everything as best I could understand, however, after reboot, I ran Norton and the virus is still there and the repair by Norton failed again. Right now, my system is doing OK. I had some other virus that was sending out emails automatically, and I got a call from my ISP saying to check for viruses. That seems to be cured. Everything seems to be running fine, but I dont know what this virus (rdriv.sys) will do in the long run. BTW, there was one item that you wanted me to check on my previous HJT log and fix, but it was not on my scan:

Hello again M Wilson

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen.

We are almost clear of malware, so we might try to find this elusive virus. Let’s have a go at least.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok
Scroll down and find this service:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

WinToolsSvc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Next part is to go online for a virus check.

Trend Housecall

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot.

OK, did that. While Housecall was running scan, Norton kept popping up with virus detected, then Housecall would also show the same virus and file name, after which it would let me clean it up. However, only one file name appeared that I Norton or Housecall could even access or clean or delete:

C:\WINNT\Temp\Big_Dick.exe

Sounds like a very "nice" file...hahaha. Housecall said it could not be accessed because "it is currently in use". What is this? Is this where the virus is possibly hiding? Also, after running HJT again, the entry you wanted me to check and fix

Great news on the virus, presumably named after a man called Richard who was 6’ 4” tall and weighed 240 lbs.

Well, I was hoping to give you the all clear and sadly I can’t, you have an infection present that needs our attention.

Hello again

Some tasks are best done in safe mode since only a minimal set of system drivers load and the fixes therefore work better, also in safe mode there is no internet connection open, so some spyware can't send a S-O-S message to their home network or request anything.

Therefore, if the file we wish to kill is already loaded and running, trying to kill it in normal mode will often just mean that on next boot, it is back.

With this last fix, safe mode is not necessary since you are asking Killbox to kill the file before it loads. And the instructions from HJT to the registry is OK in normal mode.

The bit about reversal is the FILE view which normally I ask victims to show all files so that they are easier to find, but since with yourself, you told me that you knew little about PC's by using a name with more than just a hint in it, I used an automated system of killing them, hence I should not have left that paragraph in your instructions; my apologies for keeping you awake at night wondering. I put it down to me having a senior moment.

Hello again M Wilson

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Still not clean, Taskwin is back and it is a new one. Let’s try this:

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Please check this file on your PC C:\WINNT\system32\taskwin.exe
Check File Here

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
* Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINNT\system32\taskwin.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.
