As I stated above. Once it gets below 10% you take a risk of corrupting the MFT (Master File Table) which could cause your system to become unbootable.

well, I think bootability is the least of my worries right at the moment :D

The uninstall of SP3 did not fix the problem, alas. It seemed to at first, but today my system has crashed in the same way about three or four times. Most of those times had the high-speed fan issue again -- the roaring noise from my case. Could be the PSU, could be the graphics card; they both have fans.

<sigh>

So what's next? I still have to do that chkdsk /r ... any other ideas?

thanks

Do the chkdsk :D
You need to open the case up and duplicate the issue so you can see what fan is causing the noise.

I'll do the chkdsk asap. Didn't work the last time, for some reason. I did it from windows, and opted to restart.

The case thing ... I'll have to rearrange my desk ... might take a while ;)

Yep when you type in the command in the Run window it will ask if you want to do it on the next reboot.
Instructions below.
Go to

Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

due to the holidays (and my forgetful memory) I have yet to run that chkdsk /r.

HOWEVER I have a tool called AnVir which runs in the background -- it's sort of a process and performance monitoring thing.

Using that I have found at least two questionable items in my drivers list: BEEP.SYS which claims to be a Microsoft file, and something called 'an8qv6i5' which is running, but I can't find the file in order to effect any operations on it. I've got system search looking for it, and it hasn't found anything.

I've looked other places and they seem to think that beep.sys is a threat.

I didn't check the processes that weren't running, much, but there did seem to be a fair number of oddities in that list as well.

How would you recommend getting rid of those two files?

anvir's information follows:
an8qv6i5 <File missed> <File missed> Running In kernel C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\an8qv6i5.SYS 11.01.12 23:59
Beep BEEP Driver Microsoft Corporation Running System Kernel driver C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Beep.sys 5.1.2600.0 04.08.12 07:17 4224 Base 08.04.20 02:17

I suggest you read the 'Start Here' topic found here. With these self-help tools you have a high chance of fixing the problems on your own. If you are still having problems after following Step 3 of the guide, continue with Step 4 and 5 and post in the Malware Forum. If you are unable to run any programs, Please create a topic stating what you have tried so far and that you are unable to run any programs. Also, Please do NOT post the logs in this thread.

If you are still having issues after the malware expert gives you a clean bill of health, Please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).
Add a link to this topic so that malware tech can see what steps have been taken here

okay, rshaffer61 -- and what was that other guy's name? macboatmaster? thanks for your help :D It's much appreciated.

I posted this thread in the other forum you suggested. Hopefully something good happens.

I hope you meant that I shouldn't post the OTL logs in THIS thread, because I posted them in the other thread as directed by the forum instructions ;)

thanks a lot, again.

They are very busy but if you don't get a response in 3 days then post in the waiting room and they usually get right on it.

thanks for the advice. I'll post there tomorrow, making it four days; I've gone on this long so one more day won't kill me :D

I am not done with the spyware scans in the other thread you referred me to. However, something important happened when I was running the scans while I was in another room.

I had one of those crashes when the fan went crazy loud. For the first time, I got an error report upon restarting, and I thought you might be able to divine a culprit from the log files.

Yeah Rkinner is seeing the same thing I saw with the possible culprit being
  • bad memory... checked and verified ok
  • bad hd checked and verified
  • bad driver ran in safe mode and no problems
  • possible bad motherboard
