I need help, 2 dAys ago i was usin my computer, talking on facebook when prevx anti virus told me 3 viruses just entered my pc, 5 mins later my computer restarted by itself, when it came back on, it went to the compaq screen, then a black screen with a little blinking cursor_
it detects my hardrive but it wont boot.
i tried boting from a windows xp cd, it still went to the blank screen,
i tried going to setup and switching the boot order, so that it boots from hard drive 1st,
then i tried it so it boots from cd drive and that didnt work,
i tried to unplugging the hardrive and cd driver and replug it back that didnt work,
i dont hear my harddrive spinning when it goes to the black sceen either,
i dont know what to do is it a harddrive failure or a malware, but the cd drive wont boot so isk how to fix it, any help?

Try clearing the CMOS. You do this by pulling the battery out of the motherboard. Do you have another computer to plug that hard drive into to check it out?

You can't remove the hard drive? You don't get any POST beeps? The first thing I would try is disconnecting the HDD from the computer and then try booting from a cd. I don't know if it will let if there is no HDD present but if you can stick a working hard drive in it. If you still can't get it to work try these other things but it sounds like the HDD is shot.

Also check all your cables and HDD for damage or switch the cables out with different ones. Hook it into another SATA port on the motherboard if you're using SATA.

Sorry for not replying sooner.

Can I suggest some steps to make sure everything is set right?
To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

Hopefully you have already put the XP cd in the drive before all this. If everything is setup correctly you will get a black screen with the following message in the upper left corner:

"Push Any Key To Boot To Cd". When you see this then push any key and the cd will take over. Then follow the prompts or if you need assistance we will help.
