Before I try anything on my own, I was wondering if anyone could advise me as to what the problem may be and how to deal with it. I don't have much confidence contacting the maker because I have a feeling that they will request that it be checked and or serviced by them. It is about 2-3 years old (once already repaired at a high cost) and not under warranty anymore.

Are you using genuine HP cartridges? I note 3rd party ink makers will tell you their inks is just as good, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that some is not. And sadly, going back to genuine does not always correct the problem. Have you cleaned the print heads from the Tools menu? There are some that will say to manually clean the print head with various solutions - others warn that will permanently destroy the heads. There are instructions to clean the heads manually in your manual.
