So, I don't have numerous blue screens of death and my PC hasn't burst into flames (yet)... and I'm unsure if this is the right forum, but I'm wondering if someone can help me clean up my PC and tell me what needs to be kept and what can go.

I have a Dell B110, running windows XP home edition. I know it's no spring chicken but it would be nice if it would run faster than the tortoise. Web pages are very slow to load, and I get frequent errors telling me that programs are not responding.

I'd love to meander around and start getting rid of stuff, but as I don't know what these files/programs are, it might not be a smart idea just to get rid of stuff - for example, how many java updates do I need? And why are there so many processes running - are they all necessary?

I've used Puran defrag and TFC - neither seemed to improve performance. Have McAffee and Malwarebytes, scans pick up nothing.

If anyone would like to help, that would be great!

for example, how many java updates do I need?

Please download JavaRa from the link in my signature below to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • * Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    * Accept any prompts.
    * Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    * Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button.
  • Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

I've used Puran defrag and TFC - neither seemed to improve performance.

We'll return to this later but first I need you to do the following in the order they are presented please.

Download and install Free Everest Home Edition
Open it.
1: In left pane expand Computer folder.
2: Click once on Summary
3: In upper menu, go Report
4: And then to Quick Report-Summary
5: Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post.
Click the + by computer, click on Sensor. Get a screenshot and post it so I can check your temps and voltages...

DO NOT INCLUDE ANYTHING UNDER THE LINE THAT SAYS "DEBUG- PCI"

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Hi and thanks for your help. I ran the steps as requested - I got 2 errors when trying to use the JavaRa saying that the program wasn't responding, but worked the third attempt. One line item in Autoruns says "file not found" but I was unable to delete it from the list.

Thanks!
-Thea

Temps and Autoruns look pretty good.
Everest report I found the below.

System Memory 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

Minimum amount to run OS anymore. I suggest increasing that to one gig total.
Go to HERE and run the Crucial online scanner.
This will give you the exact memory configuration for your system.
You do not have to buy the memory from there, but write down the information and if you need assistance in purchasing the upgrade memory GTG can assist with suggestions also.

Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"

When done restart computer and then:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

Let me know how the system is running when done
