Hi All,

It was recommended that I post my error issues here.

I had a virus, which seems to be resolved and may be unrelated to the errors I am gettting.

The sytem is currently running Windows XP Pro SP2, which was upgraded from ME a long time ago. I have NOT had any issues with the system or upgrade. It was mentioned that wait to upgrade to SP3 after these errors are solved.

Below you will see links to the previous forum, where the malware was addressed. It was recommended by a member on the forum to post my inquiry here. Thank you for your help.

I have included two links below for your reference, so you have a better idea of the problems. You will see that some of the issues seem to be resolved, but best to skim through both posts and the added logs below.

Here is the original post from HJT forum:

Here is the forum post in the PC Help forum:

Pasted below are the most recent Event Viewer System Errors Log, Applications Log, and Advanced System Information Error Log. (They are pasted one after the other,)

Here is a general idea of the errors in the log from:

OK information overload :D
Lets try this a different way if you don't mind.
  • Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso VEW and save it to your Desktop:
  • Double-click VEW.exe
  • Under 'Select log to query', select (as appropriate):
    • Application
    • System
  • Under 'Select type to list', select (as appropriate):
    • Error
    • Information
    • Warning
Then use the 'Date of events' or 'Number of events' as follows:

Either:
  • Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 3 in the 1 to 20 box (or any number from 1 to 20)
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

  • Click the radio button for 'Date of events'
In the From: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 31 10 2010
In the To: boxes type today's date (presuming the crash happened today) 01 11 2010
    Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.
Please post the Output log in your next reply

Hello rshaffer61,

Thank you for responding to my inquiry. I would agree that it is a bit of information overload. Below is the requested log. The machine was put into hibernation since yesterday, so the event log may not be as up to date. Also please note that the system is running in 'normal mode' but 'selective start-up.' If you would like to view more than the last 20 last events, please let me know. I will look to hear from you. Thanks again.

WOW even that is overwhelming.
Lets try to simplify this alittle. Please do the following and let me know if any improvement when you finish.

Go to

Start and then to Run
Type in Chkdsk /r Note the space between k and /
Click Enter ...It will probably ask if you want to do this on the next reboot...click Y
If the window doesn't shutdown on its own then reboot the system manually. On reboot the system will start the chkdsk operation
This one will take longer then chkdsk /f

Note... there are 5 stages...
It may appear to hang at a certain percent for a hour or more or even back up and go over the same area...this is normal...
DO NOT SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN WHILE CHKDSK IS RUNNING OR YOU CAN HAVE SEVERE PROBLEMS
This can take several hours to complete.
When completed it will boot the system back into windows.

Let me know if this fixes the problem

How To Run Chkdsk /r from Recovery Console:

How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp). (Courtesy dsenette)
  • Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  • When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  • When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  • At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:

    chkdsk /r

  • Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
  • Report any errors

When that is done we need to look at your memory and hd.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

Posted Image

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

Posted Image

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. You may have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS to make it work right.

To change Boot Sequence in your BIOS

Reboot the system and at the first post screen (where it is counting up memory) start tapping the DEL button
This will enter you into the Bios\Cmos area.
Find the Advanced area and click Enter
Look for Boot Sequence or Boot Options and highlight that click Enter
Now highlight the first drive and follow the directions on the bottom of the screen on how to modify it and change it to CDrom.
Change the second drive to the C or Main Drive
Once that is done then click F10 to Save and Exit
You will prompted to enter Y to verify Save and Exit. Click Y and the system will now reboot with the new settings.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

Posted Image

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Hello rshaffer61,

Question regarding the hard drive diagnostics and the link you included. I have HD - ST340823A, which according to google is a Seagate. I also have a secondary internal WD (but it not yet formated) and is not connected.

I looked for the seagate diagnostics software from the link you included and it seems to be a a number of different versions to choose from. This system originally had ME, which was updated to XP Pro. Which one shall I choose. I see some run directly from the windows desktop, while other(s) are DOS based?

You want the SeaTools DOS cd ISO
Then follow the instructions on how to burn the ISO file to make the cd bootable.

I went to burn the CD for the HD Diagnosis using the IMGBurn and got the following error.

"failed to set write parameters! Reason: Invalid Field in Parameter List"

I have no issues reading CD's. The CD Burner in the system is Philips CDD4801 CD-R/RW. The Device manager sees it as such - Philips CDD4801 CD-R/RW - but under 'my computer' the icon shows CD-ROM, but under the properties tab has the 'recording' tab, which is enabled/ Maybe a driver issue? Yesterday when I restarted the system in normal mode and original boot ini - (from running in selective start up and modified .ini) the 'Help and Support Center' launched mentioning something about the drive and if I wanted to address the issue I should click to bookmark to desktop, which I did, but it did not seem to bookmark to desktop nor do I see anything listed. FYI, this system used to run ME, but upgraded to WinXP a while ago. What other infomation can I provide to you?

Here is the event viewer for this specific issue only:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Looks like something is slowing it down or stopping it.

Try this:

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "Adobe ARM"
+ "Adobe Photo Downloader"
+ "Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"
+ "QuickTime Task"
+ "RealTray"
+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk"
+ "MSMSGS"
+ "Yahoo! Pager"

When done restart computer and then:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged

hello rshaffer61...thanks for the response.

I see that I missed the following item:

+ "Power Policy Settings" "" "" "File not found: setupx.dll"

should I delete this item also, or just uncheck item? Is this important for power management etc?

Thanks.

Are you using the imgburn software to burn it?
Another program you could try to do it with is Burncdcc
go here and get burncdcc ..a small FAST no frills iso burning program...

NOTE...do not put a blank cd in until burncdcc opens the tray for you
1. Start BurnCDCC by clicking on BurnCDCC.exe
2. Browse to the ISO file you want to burn on cd/dvd ....in this case its rc.iso
3. Select the ISO file
4. click on Start

Yes, that was using (or attempting to use) Imgburn. The log I posted in the previous post was from Imgburn. I will try the other program. I remember seeing something in the errors log in windows about ACPI, not sure if that is relevant. I did however need to upgrade the ASPI earlier today.
