I've had my laptop for two years and never had any problems with popups. After a babysitter downloaded several things (without my permission) I've had a popup nightmare. I've downloaded McAfee updates, spybot, adware SE, none of these have helped. I get around 10-15 popups every five minutes. I just don't know what else to do except trash the computer. I'm so frustrated!! I would appreciate any and all help. Aurora, adsrevenue1, IE seem to be the worst. Thank you so much.

That's ok. Let's get to the fix now:

Do you know what that WeirdOnTheWeb program is for?

OK, you have multiple infections there. I have covered all the fixes in the instructions below. Take your time and follow that order:

Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. Do NOT run it yet.

Please download nailfix at http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.zip (for Windows XP) or http://users.pandora...y/nailfix2k.zip (for Windows 2000) Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
Download KillBox http://www.atribune....ads/KillBox.exe
Download rkfiles http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

Download the remv3.zip at http://forums.skads....hp?showtopic=80 (look for the attachment posted in that second reply). Make a new folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip remv3.zip files into it.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Run CleanUp program now and logoff.

Download ETRemover and unzip it. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd (or nailfix2k.bat if you have Windows 2000). Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next run a full scan in Ewido. Post the log from the Ewido scan here.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Double click rkfiles.bat file to run it. It will scan for a while, so please be patient. Wait until the DOS window closes. Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now open the folder where you saved remv3.zip files and double click the rem.bat file and let it run. It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and bad1.txt

**Note** Each tool uses log.txt as it’s output file so make sure you save the entries from one tools log before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you don’t.

Run ETRemover.exe now.

Restart your computer in normal mode and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan. I also want those two logs for rkfiles and remv3.

Thank you again. I have not responded until today because my computer crashed Friday night and I have not been able to reboot. I kind of felt like that was coming because it was doing a lot of weird stuff. What should I do now, system restore?

Your computer was heavily infected, so that crash was most likely caused by this.

So you can't login to Windows at all now? Have you tried both Safe Mode and Normal Mode?

If you can't login at all, then you should see a screen with the various options listed there. Choose to load the last known good configuration.

Is it getting any better now? Can you boot into Normal Mode? If you can, do the fixes in Safe Mode but restart to go back to Normal Mode to give me the new log. Don't do it yet. Let's get some more fixing done:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Yes, I was able to do a normal boot after I did things the first time. I did do things in the order you told me and made logs, but something must have removed to the saved log files because after I rebooted, the only file I had was the HJT file. The computer runs so much better, but...some of the files I thought I had removed seem to have not been removed. I have no idea where they went. Some of the things that you wanted removed were not there after I did all that other stuff (Clean This, etc.) Also, I was not able to download the KillBox, web page was unavailable, just thought you'd like to know. The Ewido program took 3 hours to run on my computer, is that normal? I will do this when I get home and repost the HJT log after I'm done. It may not be until tomorrow though because I was on the computer most of the night last night and my kids will kill me if I do it again tonight. I can't thank you enough.

I think I know what you are talking about. You did this in Safe Mode right and tried to get those saved logs in Normal Mode. The problem here is that in Safe Mode there is a separate Administrator account for you to login. And when you saved your logs, it was saved in that particular Administrator account. OK, now to get those logs, it should be simple enough. Go into C:\Documents and Settings\ and see if you can find that Administrators account folder in there. If you can, go into those folders and look for the logs - if you saved it on your Desktop, then just go straight to that Desktop folder under the Administrator account folder. I just need the rkfiles, remv3 and Ewido logs that were ran in Safe Mode.

Yes, some of these entries may return and that's why we ask for a followup log to make sure it's gone.

Yes, that might be normal. I seen Ewido scans that take anywhere from 20 minutes to many hours (almost a day for some). Hopefully it didn't take that long for you.

No problem. It's best to get this done as soon as you can, but if you need the computer for something else, then I guess you can wait a little. But don't wait too long since some of these will keep reinfecting other areas and make matters worse. Best to fix it up first and then let them use it, but I know what you mean

Okay, I'll look for those folders there. I did run those programs in safe mode like you said. I haven't been on the computer since I've cleaned it and posted the new log, so don't worry, nothing will have been added (I hope). The Ewido took about three hours to run, and when it got to the end, an error message came up and said it had to close the program. I ran it AGAIN (I told you I was on the computer all night and it took about 2 hours that time, another error message, so I do not want to have to run that program again unless I know why it keeps sending me error messages and shutting down. I have no log of that, sorry, what would you like me to do. I will be working on the computer tonight. Thanks so much, you're a lifesaver.
