Hi. I was on internet explorer when all of a sudden it froze and my computer started to strangely work (as if it were opening up a program). THe next thing i knew internet explorer froze, and i had to close it via Ctrl alt del and end the process. When it finally closed, i noticed that on my desktop, "My Computer" and "My Network Places" were both renamed to "Folder", and there were two no name folders on my desktop with nothing in them. Also, Quick Launch had dissapeared (though i can get it back by checking it), and when i click on the Start Menu... the "Programs" list was empty. When i clicked on internet explorer, it just opens a blank page and doesn't execute to any page. There is no address bar, and when i try to put one, nothing happens. None of my programs on my computer run. I can't execute System Restore or "Find" to see what was added to my computer during the time of this attack. When i open a folder, the only way i can close it is by pressing Ctrl alt del because it won't close by pressing the X on the right hand corner.. my pc freezes instead. The weird thing is i had Norton Anti-Virus 2005 on and it didn't detect anything... and the next thing i knew i wasn't even running (the virus had disabled it somehow ) I can't do anything on my computer. This is one nasty virus. Please Help.

Please be patient here. You posted another topic only about an hour ago.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update and then Check For Update to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Uninstall Viewpoint from the Add/Remove panel.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Greyknight, thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the double posts :tazz: .

I will post a hijack this ASAP.. but roughly at around 7 pm Pacific Standard Time on the 27th. That's when i get back from work. I am using my sisters computer, so im kind've tied up.

I appreciate your the time you took to consider my problem, and i will report back soon.

Hi. I did waht you asked me to do. The problems i have are still there however, and another thing i noticed was that control panel has been renamed to "folder" and tehre was a blank forder tehre, with no name, and nothing in it. Very strange. I Couldn't open Add/Remove Programs.. a blank screen just came up.

I hate this. ;)

It's usually not recommended to disable services via msconfig, but I guess if it works, then we'll do it that way. It's gone now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Start->OK and then follow the rest of the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 http://tds.diamondcs...p?page=download. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs...?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs...php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it run. If it doesn't find any missing/corrupted files, it should close by itself. If it does find something, it may ask for your Windows CD.

Thanks for the reply ;) .

I have DSL connection, but i can't open Internet Explorer.. (it just shows a blank page w/ no address bar), so i can't scan via internett. Also, my Norton Anti-Virus 2005 doesn't even start up with my comptuer any more, and when i try to launch it.. it corrupts. :tazz: .

Just wanted to let you know..

Is the address bar hidden? OK, go into Internet Explorer and right click on a blank area in the top (where the other icons are). Make sure the lock entry is unchecked. Now right click again and make sure that Address Bar is checked. See if you can see the address bar icon anywhere in your browser. It may just be minimized, so take a careful look. If you see it, but just don't have the field to type text in, just click on it and drag it out so it expands.

Do what you can and tell me what you skipped.

The address bar is not hidden; it's gone. It's checked under options but it just won't come up. It isn't there. And now.. when i click on internet explorer, it instead of displaying the page.. it asks if i want to download it. I can't open any websites or html files... inernet explorer is in horrible shape.


As far as TDS-3.. the program froze every time it scanned my computer :tazz: . I couldn't get it to work.

the svc /scannow had no problems.. it scanned and closed on it's own.

As far as my pc goes... the start menu programs list is still empty, quick launch dissapears, Norton Antivirus won't work, neither would some of my .exe's like Windows Media Player.. and i already mentioned what happened to internet explorer.



Is there any way i can get internet explorer, as well as my other programs back to normal? --> even when i click ona shortcut on my desktop to open, it won't execute... i have to right click it and click on open for it to open. Control Panel is still called "Folder" and i still can't execute Add/Remove programs.

Hope you have some solutions to these problems.

EDIT: I also noticed that MMC is corrupt. I won't run any programs.. (for example services.msc like you suggested earlier.. as well as any other ".msc"). ANy suggestions on how to fix MMC?

We need to get that TDS-3 program working somehow. Does it work in Safe Mode or did you try that already? Try renaming TDS-3.exe to something like TDSold.exe and try running it in normal/safe mode (whichever works).

If that fails, try this:
Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Get this on another PC if you still can't go online:
The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/Cleanup.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Then get this file and unzip it. Run the .bat file.

I tried TDS 3 in safe mode, even renamed it and tried it both in normal windows and safe mode and it still didn't work. I think this is because internet explorer is corrupted. ;)

I ran clean up and installed the .bat file you gave me.. but nothing seems different. :)

MMC still doesn't work. Most of my programs do not work. Inernet explorer is still corrupted. ;)

I also noticed suspicious things in my C:/Documents and Settings folder. There was a folder called Administrator that was created the same day i got the virus. Could this major clue help me resolve this issue? :tazz:

OK, I got this from another user who figured out a similar problem to yours.

I went to My Computer and went under Tools and selected Folder Options. Under the tab File Type I scrolled through the extensions and looked for EXE, because it was the EXE files that were opening in notepad. There was no EXE extension so I created a new one by clicking on New. I then went to advanced and selected for EXE to be associated with Application. It then told me that EXE was being opened with notepad, and it let me restore it to its default. That fixed the problem.

See if that will work for you also.

I looked through our earlier replies and you didn't mention if anything was found by the SFC scan.

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it run. If it doesn't find any missing/corrupted files, it should close by itself. If it does find something, it may ask for your Windows CD.

Not sure about that Administrator folder. It could be legitimate if that folder or maybe the contents were modified. So I suggest leaving it. Maybe check out what contents that folder has? I think it might be the default administrator account (assuming you are looking at it in safe mode).

You're right.. EXE wasn't an option under Folder Options. But whenever i would add the EXE extension, it would dissapear whenever i revisited the File Types window under folder options. ;) EXE

As for sfc/ scannow, i did the scan and it closed on it's own.. so i guess it didn't detect anything missing :tazz: .

As for internet explorer.. i've given up hope. I downloaded Mozilla Firefox.. but when i try to access any website, an error pops up, saying "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www. <site> .com. Even though im on the internet ( i have DSL), it won't connect.

Also, my start menu is still missing the "programs list" and the Quick Launch toolbar dissapears every time i restart my computer, or log off a user. I have to manually put it back there every time i start my computer.

Please help

For the EXE, click on NEW and then Advanced button (I think). Then select Application from the drop down menu and click OK and then OK again. See if any of those programs work now.

See if this fixes the internet problem:
Download WinsockFix http://www.greyknigh.../WinsockFix.zip and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

We need to run some kind of virus/trojan scanner and since TDS-3 won't work (try it again to double check), do this instead:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

I added to EXE to the File Types. Thanks for the clarification.

Also, the WinSockFix didn't do much. The connection worked in Safe Mode.. but when i went to normal windows, I still get the same message on Mozilla as before.

As for MicroWorld Antivirus, thanks a lot. I didn't realize how corrupted my computer really was, and how many viruses/trojans/spyware i had.

The log from the microworld scan is attached. It didn't fit when i pasted it on here.

Is there anyway i can fix the internet so that not only mozilla, but other programs that need an internet connection to work can run?

Man, that's a huge log. Don't like how mwav displays those invalid registry entries since they are a huge waste of space and usually don't cause any problems.

OK, I want you to look at page 41 and start deleting files starting from:

File C:\WINDOWS\addvn32.exe infected by "Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.bq" Virus! Action Taken: No Action Taken.


Just delete what's mentioned after the word File.

When you are done, uninstall WildTangent from the Add/Remove panel.

Download CCleaner and run the temp file cleaner. Delete all that's found. Then go to the Issues tab and scan for all issues. You may fix all the entries found or if you want, look through them and see which ones you recognize and leave them alone. Most likely these entries will be obsolete, so it's probably ok to delete them anyway since they are junk now.

After you are done fixing that, restart and run a new mwav log. Hopefully it will be less stressing to the eye this time :tazz:
