I have Windows XP and am using itunes 10.1.1. When I burn a playlist, it will start to write to the CD-R, but then will stop after a couple songs and cancel the burning process. It then gives an error message "the attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (4900). If you want to try the current failed burn, click on retry."

I'd try a different brand of CD-R first.

I think one of my friends had a problem similar to yours once. If I remember correctly, we fixed it by switching one of the settings to AAC encoding instead of MP3. See if that works.
