TV Media player works with flash drive but not HDD

I am trying to use my tv media player. I can watch movies from my USB flash drive just fine. But when I use my usb external hard drive, the movies will always freeze and lag. I am assuming its not tranferring the movie fast enough so its laggin?
Anyone have any tips.
The hard drive is NTSF format with 4kb cache. The drive is only 100 GB but only has about 15Gb full. SO lots of the drive is free.

Has anyone else had this problem? Or know a fix?
