Malware Removal Infections Found

When I try to carry out scans with AVG or Malwarebytes the system stops responding. The Malwarebytes scan is showing 4 infections before it stops responding. I have tried to run OTL but in runs a scan for a few minutes but then stops responding. After these packages stop responding I am unable to close them without shutting down the machine. There is also realy bad lag when trying to use any other software.
The system spec is ASUS notebook F3U Series, Windows Vista Home Premium, AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile thchnologyTL58 1.90GHz, 1791mb Ram, 32 bit OS. Any help would be appreciated.
