I have a home based business and I must have daily access to online banking and accounting. I am afraid to log-in. Basically I can't find anything wrong with my machine. Everything works, but it literally takes 2-3 minutes to launch any application. Everything operates at a snails pace. The simplest tasks take insane amounts of time. Generating quote for customers should take 5-10 minutes, but it takes 45 minutes to an hour sometimes. Forget about using the internet, holy S-L-O-W Batman. Please help! Thanks:-)

1. Click on the start menu and click on 'Run', and then type 'services.msc' and press the Enter button.
2. In the Services window, look for HP CUE Device Discovery Service, and double click on it.
3. You should see a button labeled 'STOP'. click on that button.
4. Above this, you should find something which says 'Startup Type'. Change that to 'Disabled'
5. Click on the 'Apply' button and close all windows.

Reboot. If that helped then you don't have to go any further.

If that doesn't help then Start, (All) Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type
msconfig
with an Enter at the end of the line.

Under Startup, uncheck everything but your anti-virus or wireless (if used). Under Services, click first on Hide Microsoft Services then uncheck all that remain except your anti-virus and wireless (if used). Apply, OK and reboot into regular mode. Cancel out msconfig if it comes up.

If it now runs much faster then one of the items you unchecked is the culprit. Go back into msconfig and turn on all the Startup items by checking them and Apply then reboot. If it slows down then one of the startup items is at fault. Go back in and uncheck about half. If not then check about half of the Services and reboot.

If still not better then:
Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator). Click once or twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top. File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Turn off or Pause your Antivirus.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to george.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Working through the solutions there was no genuine improvement in performance. I got to the point where I was starting combofix (george.exe rather) and this is what is gave me.

Hmmm...i tried to paste in a screen shot here to show you, but that is not working. It was a warning to the effect of, you have a corrupt version of combofix, you need to download a fresh one from bleepingcomputer...which I attempted to do. This new download will not complete, as the "corrupt" version of george.exe is still trying to run.

Here are the logs I have so far.

UPDATE***

Combofix did eventually start to run. It warned me that lavasoft ad-aware and symantec anti-virus were running. I thought those programs were already off, but I went to shut them off in services and ad-aware was not running...and symantec had some pieces running and soem not. I stopped everything symantec and let combofix go. It said again, that those programs were running but combofix would continue at my risk. I tried to stop it but it ran anyway, and produced a small blue screen with a command prompt and nothing else.

Sometimes it takes a little while for Combofix to get moving and if the CPU is pegged it can take a lot longer so give it about 15 minutes to start running.

You might also try running it in Safe mode with Networking and see if it can run there.

Appears from Process Explorer that services.exe is eating up a lot more time that it should. Were you able to Disable the HP CUE Device Discovery Service? I'm also seeing some errors from BTHUSB about not being configured correctly. I'm thinking this is a driver BTHUSB.sys and if you right click on My Computer then select Manage and Device Manager you might be able to find it under Network Adapters. If it's there then right click on it and Disable it then OK and reboot and see if that helps.

Yes HP CUE Device Discovery Service was disabled (was the 1st thing I did). I have not done anything with BTHUSB yet, as combofix did actually run after figuring out to disable symantec av and needed to uninstall ad-aware. Haha, combofix ran for nearly 3 hours. Here is the log...

I look forward to taking the next steps toward getting things cleaned up. Thank you so much for your assistance so far.

I'm thinking that this HP service may be at fault:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
HPZ12 REG_MULTI_SZ Pml Driver HPZ12 Net Driver HPZ12
hpdevmgmt REG_MULTI_SZ hpqcxs08 hpqddsvc
HPService REG_MULTI_SZ HPSLPSVC

Lots of complaints about it slowing down PCs and eating CPU time.

Open up HP Solution Center, go to Settings --> Updates and Usage Settings and disable all automatic updates and information sharing with HP.

IF that doesn't help then try stopping the
HPZ12 or PML driver HPZ12 service and setting the Startup to Disabled. IF that doesn't help look for an HPService to also Stop & Disable.

There may be an update for the driver from HP. What printer do you have?

Automatic updates and information sharing is off..always has been. I have been using this this printer for 3 years and it has never seemed to effect performance...but I could be wrong. Whatever slow down I may have experienced in the past because of HP services...this slow down is way different. My PC isn't just slow, it barely works. I can type faster than text can display :-) and I'm not super fast at typing.

I did stop PML Driver HPZ12, that yielded a very slight improvement, but almost imperceptible difference in performance.

My printer is the HPC780 All-in-One, printer fax copy scanner

Run Process Explorer again. Find services.exe What CPU percentage is it using? (In your first log it said 9.20) If it is still more than 1 then:

underneath it are a whole bunch of svchost.exe entries.

As you run your mouse over it each it will tell you what each does. Find the one that does the HP stuff

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
HPZ12 REG_MULTI_SZ Pml Driver HPZ12 Net Driver HPZ12
hpdevmgmt REG_MULTI_SZ hpqcxs08 hpqddsvc
HPService REG_MULTI_SZ HPSLPSVC

right click on it and Suspend.

Does the CPU % for services drop to 1 or less?

Can't seem to find any HPC780 on the HP site. Are you sure that's the number?

Sorry, the model number for the printer is HP C7280.

I did the right click suspend and the services CPU stayed the same...roughly 3%

Honestly, this machine seems to be running ok today. Pretty normal actually. In your opinion, was this a malware situation or just process configuration that got out of whack?

Just need to know if I can start going back to online banking and accounting. Thanks Ron

No sign of any real malware. IF the CPU peaks again, run process explorer and click on CPU twice then save the log as before.

You have a bunch of stuff turned off in msconfig. You may want to turn them back on and see if it still runs OK.

I did have another thought on the matter of the slowness.

Download SIW.exe

http://www.gtopala.c...ownload/siw.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it.

It will have a section under Hardware called Sensors which should show you your CPU temperatures. What are they? Run something like a movie or an anti-virus scan and after about 5 minutes check the temperatures again. Are they stable?

Temp seems stable. It went from 74 degrees C to 75 after about 15 minuted into a full virus scan. Everything seems to be performing the way I am accustomed to. Thank you for everything.

Yes it is a laptop (I do use a docking station though). The fan does run constantly, but the performance is much improved. Probably time to blow the dust out of it again.

Definitely a good idea. You might also want to invest in a cooler pad. Big Lots had some last week for only $10. Usually laptops run hotter but not that hot. Around 50C.
