My machine won't boot of the XP instalation CD

I removed the offending hardrive and tried to boot my own computer with it resulting in the same "A disk read error occured." Apparently the problem was the HD all along. I had already ordered a new HD which is now installed, formatted and running. Next step is to connect the old HD as slave (if that is the word one uses now) and see if I can download the files off of it to the new HD.
