Hi, I should preface this by saying I am not very computer-savvy. I know enough to get by, but when things start getting technical I am liable to get lost.
The problem I am having is on a PC at work. Yesterday I was checking my webmail and I got a "Spyware Protection" popup which said it was scanning my computer. I didn't recognize it and figured it was just spam so didn't click on anything except the close button (X). It appears to have downloaded regardless and I can't close it; moreover, it is now blocking pretty much anything I try to run, including SpywareDoctor and the Task Manager. Every time I try to run an antivirus or program, it blocks it saying "_.exe is infected by W32/Blaster.worm. Please activate Spyware Protection to protect your computer."
After a couple of attempts I managed to restart in safe mode, which is where I have left it. The first thing I tried was to check the Add or Remove Programs list from the control panel, but the "Spyware Protection" is not listed.
I am now stuck as to my next move. The infected machine is the home of the shared drive for the office, and while it is in safe mode we cannot access the shared drive, or use the office scanner or printer. The PC I am posting from is another machine on the same network.
Any help or advice you can give will be gratefully received.

I should also note that I am only able to access this forum, or try suggestions on the infected PC, between 09:00 and 17:30 GMT.

Hello SummertimeProp and welcome to G2G!

My name is Cold Titanium ;) , and I will be assisting you with your problem. I am still in training, so all my replies need to be checked by an expert first. So there may be a slight delay in between replies.

Please follow all of my instructions without skipping anything. Also, please refrain from experimenting around whilst I am helping you. At times some of the things I tell you to do may seem unnecessary and frustrating, but just stick to it and we'll get through :D

;) Note: Please save these instructions in a file or print them out, as the internet may not be available while we are fixing the system.

I am clearing my response now...

Hello,

Does your workplace have an IT department and are they aware of the situation?

Hi, thanks for replying. No, there is no IT dept at our company. It is a very small company (down to just 3 of us after recent downsizing), and previously all IT issues had been outsourced to a local independent IT contractor; however he has since retired and we have not found anyone else locally to help.

Also, apologies for the delay in responding; I was out of the office yesterday due to a family emergency.

Ok, here's the deal:

There are malicious processes blocking the execution of those tools. We need to kill those processes long enough to run our tools.

We have PLAN A and PLAN B available. If nothing from Plan A will work, then move on to Plan B.

If you can't access the Internet from the infected machine then you'll have to use a flash drive to transfer programs and logs. If that is the case I'd like you to protect the flash drive by running this program first:

Do this on the clean machine

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
    Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • Reboot your computer when done.

      Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you run it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    PLAN A
    Step #1
    Note: If using Firefox right-click on any download links and choose Save As
    Please download OTH to your desktop
    Please download OTL to your desktop
    Please download the attached file Scan.txt to your desktop
    Double click the OTH file to run it and click Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank.
    Posted Image
    Then select Start OTL. OTL will now run
    • Double-click on the Custom Scans box and a message box will popup asking if you want to load a custom scan from a file
      Select Scan.txt that you downloaded
    • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
      [list]
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Click the Internet Explorer button, post these logs in your Virus Removal topic. If IE still won't work then copy the logs onto the Flash Drive and post from the clean computer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PLAN B

In Plan B we have 2 different options: rKill or exeHelper

If Option 1 fails try Option 2. If they both fail return here and inform me. DO NOT continue if they fail!

OPTION 1 - exeHelper

There are 3 different versions of exeHelper:

Download to your desktop and then double-click to open.

If the first one does not work then try the next and so on...

Do not reboot your computer after running exehelper as the malware programs will start again.

OPTION 2 - rKill

There are 3 different versions of rkill:

Download to your desktop and then double-click to open.

If the first one does not work then try the next and so on...

If you get exeHelper or rKill to run then do the following steps, else come back here and tell me...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step #2
If you get rKill or exeHelper to run then do this...
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top make sure it is set to Standard Output.
  • Ensure the Use SafeList is selected for Extra Registry
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    netsvcs
    drivers32 /all
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\*.wt
    %systemroot%\system32\*.ruy
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.com
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.dll
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini
    %systemroot%\Fonts\*.ini2
    %systemroot%\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.*
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.bak1
    %systemroot%\REPAIR\*.ini
    %systemroot%\system32\*.jpg
    %systemroot%\*.scr
    %systemroot%\*._sy
    %APPDATA%\Adobe\Update\*.*
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Favorites\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\*.*
    %PROGRAMFILES%\*.*
    %APPDATA%\Update\*.*
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2help.dll /md5
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install|LastSuccessTime /rs
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Step #3

  • Download GMER to your desktop
  • Right-Click and extract it to the desktop
  • Double-Click gmer.exe
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

After it finishes scanning
  • Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save it to your desktop

Post ark.txt in your next reply

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Post OTL.txt and ark.txt in your next reply... :D
No worries, thanks :-)
Also, another possibly dense question - when you say my desktop will go blank when I Kill All Processes, will that affect any files I have saved to the desktop? Should I save them elsewhere before I start?
No. OTH does not do anything with your data. It is just killing all current running processes.
OK, I restarted in normal mode (having been sitting in Safe Mode since Tuesday) and the first thing I saw was a message saying Microsoft Security Essentials had found and removed 1 threat in the scheduled scan. The Spyware Protection didn't pop up this time, so I am really hoping that is what was removed. However I did not want to assume anything, so I carried out the instructions in Plan A; please find the logs below:
Hi,
I'd like to see one more log
Step #1
  • Download GMER to your desktop
  • Right-Click and extract it to the desktop
  • Double-Click gmer.exe
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
After it finishes scanning
  • Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save it to your desktop
Post ark.txt in your next reply
